Can’t thank these guys enough. My partner and I stayed here recently and I decided to pop the question and the hotel staff were more than happy to help out with my plans. They decorated the room in roses at my request and handled all of my daft ideas with class and care. They were also discreet so she had no idea it was coming, although she did get suspicious when she saw the door to our room, as given our special circumstance the receptionist had upgraded us for free to the best room in the building! An extremely generous touch that improved our stay. All proposally stuff aside, the hotel is very luxurious, clean and well maintained. The bar is just the chill atmosphere you'd like. The beds are comfortable and the location is a perfect spot for anyone looking to explore York on foot with ease. Theres also a lovely pool, hot tub and gym available to guests and passersby. Thank you Principal!

Superb hotel with attentive, helpful staff who make your stay special. We stayed two nights for our wedding anniversary and we were treated like royalty, we even got a free bottle of fizz delivered to our room and a voucher for a free drink at the bar!! Our room had a beautiful view across the gardens and York Minster was visible in the distance. It was a really lovely weekend.

This was our first visit to the Principle, York and we wasn't disappointed. Parking is straight forward, with amble room. The check in staff were very polite and helpful. Our room wasn't quite ready, this wasn't a problem as we had arrived early, we just headed off to Thor's Bar, that sits in the grounds of the Principle, at the front of the hotel. Our room was on the 3rd floor, looking over the Castle which was nice. The room had everything that you would need for an overnight stay, a very comfortable bed, and is surprising quiet as your are not far from a busy main road and train station. The hotel itself is lovely, modern and old melded together beautifully. You are about a 10 minute walk into the center of York, and everything is signposted really well so places are easy to find. As you can imagine York was busy, with queues for Betty's Tearoom winding it way around the little square that's its situated in. Always best to book this time of year, unless you like a long wait to be seated.. We had a slow walk round taking in the sights, but if it's photos you want of quieter street then I suggest you get up early of go back later in the evening, which is what we did. There's still plenty of people about but not to many that you can't get some good shots. The Principle is a great hotel, it has a great location, food is amazing, and has a very friendly atmosphere. Looking forward to our next visit.

Nice grand hotel. The lobby is large and impressive. Check-in was friendly and helpful. Large room, comfortable bed, clean, large TV, safe, ironing board and more. Very quiet. The bathroom is large. Unfortunately, the door didn't close but it is clean with great shower. Great outdoor bar. The location is fantastic everything is walkable. I've read other reviews about car parking charges and despite the management feedback on Google I feel you pay for a service and that should be included in the price. Overall recommend it is in a great location location but be cautious if parking.

We had a very comfortable one night stay here, upgraded to a suite on the 4th floor. Roomy and well equipped though these old hotels do have issues with kettle placements !! Ie. nowhere near a plug 😂. Breakfast was a bit disappointing, some of the worst coffee I’ve ever had and buffet was limited I felt. However, was clean, fantastic building and walking distance to the city Centre. Would recommend.
