Built in 1906 as a ‘Palace of Business’, originally the headquarters for one of the most powerful railway companies in England, it was built during the Golden Age of travel. The Grand is an iconic building, which reflects the elegance and glamour of the period, the success and wealth of the company that commissioned it.
In 2010, this imposing building was reborn as one of Yorkshire’s finest hotels and meeting spaces. Splendidly retaining many of its original features, The Grand exudes luxury and grandeur and has a reputation for exceptional service in the style and tradition you would expect from a five-star hotel, combined the warmest of Yorkshire welcomes.
The Grand, York is surrounded by the longest and best-preserved medieval walls in England. York is steeped in a rich history dating back to the Romans and the Vikings. The architecture and visitor attractions are testament to this, with a roll call of cultural treasures, museums and art.
The Leeman Suite is named after arguably the most famous of York’s railway men, George Leeman, who led an extraordinary life as a lawyer, Liberal MP and finally Chairman of the North Eastern Railway from 1874-1880. The suite suits boardroom meetings for up to 12 delegates, and 20 theatre-style.

February 2025A lovely elegant place to have afternoon tea in bone china cups and silver ware tea pots...at any time. Relaxing & comfortable tea salon area. Don't need to order full tea & sandwiches service but can just order tea on its own. Good choice of black, green & flavoured teas.

January 2025Absolutely amazing stay at The Grand! We had a sea view and wow what a great room. We have stayed here a few years ago but the place is superb after its renovations. The staff are helpful and friendly on the desk & front of house. The bar was welcoming and the waiting staff were efficient and five star. We had breakfast which was first class, again the staff were brilliant and food hot & delicious! We will most definitely be rebooking to visit again.

February 2025We had a lovely 1 night stay here for my partners birthday. From the moment we stepped through the door the staff were welcoming and eager to help. The interiors were grand and warm. Our room was upgraded to a sea view which was an outstanding touch, the room itself was simply beautiful. The fact they are dog friendly is amazing. Could not fault this hotel at all. We will definitely be returning.

March 2025What an amazing experience. We stayed at the Grand for the first time for my wife's birthday. The staff were super friendly. We got a free upgrade which was just superb. The breakfast was easily the best hotel breakfast I've ever had. Look forward to return.

January 2025I have to say this Hotel actually deserves 5 stars BUT… When the leadership of the hotel doesn’t respond to feedback on their booking process when directly addressed to them, that speaks poorly for the future of the hotel. Not even an acknowledgement of receipt! (There is no management rating to be able to give them 1 star) Aside from that the hotel is great - a grand historic building well maintained, a great restaurant and bar and a very attentive team (leadership excepted!). Special shout out to Mauro who makes breakfast fun and provided a great recommendation for dinner! Let’s hope leadership letting the side down doesn’t create a negative impact on the good work of the rest of the team!
