Built in 1906 as a ‘Palace of Business’, originally the headquarters for one of the most powerful railway companies in England, it was built during the Golden Age of travel. The Grand is an iconic building, which reflects the elegance and glamour of the period, the success and wealth of the company that commissioned it.

In 2010, this imposing building was reborn as one of Yorkshire’s finest hotels and meeting spaces. The Grand, York is surrounded by the longest and best-preserved medieval walls in England. York is steeped in a rich history dating back to the Romans and the Vikings. The architecture and visitor attractions are testament to this, with a roll call of cultural treasures, museums and art.

The staff couldn't have been more welcoming and accommodating, in particular the staff in the Victoria Terrace, who served our Afternoon Tea (paid and booked separately to the main hotel stay.) The rooms were stylish, cosy and clean. I was particularly impressed that the shower was very powerful. The views from the restaurants, including the breakfast area, were lovely as you could look out directly to the old pier. The breakfast was great; it had a large selection of self service options as well as an omelette bar. The downsides and reasons it dropped from a 5-star to 4-star rating: - Very late check-in (4:00pm) and early check out (11:00am), although we could leave bags with the concierge - there was some VERY loud construction noise directly above our room, which we were not informed about before booking or when we checked in. This put a dampener on the stay to begin with, as we were unable to relax in our room without builders screaming and drilling until they left at 5:30pm. For the price we paid, it would have been nice to have been told, but overall a good stay.

Brilliant location, quiet place to stay (no disturbance from other guests) and ample breakfast options. The room was well looked after although there was dust along the skirting. Very comfortable beds. Only slight is that it is incredibly expensive £350+ for one night plus breakfast (nothing else was purchased on this visit). The restaurant (previous visit) provides a lovely Sunday lunch. Overall I'd recommend as it feels safe and the staff are lovely. The rooms feel luxurious. And the food we have had on both visits were faultless.

We stayed here for a concert we were going to. Downstairs in the bar areas and reception is very nice and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. We had food and a couple of drinks, which was nice. Now our room was very tiered and in need of an update also the centre of the hotel where the stairs are is also very tiered. The carpet is thread bare and there is tape holding the corners of the carpet down. Considering the expensive cost per room and how tiered the hotel is, we definitely won't stay here again.

We had a very very bad stay. Everything was actually great, until the next day after checking in we suddenly heard construction noise so loud that we couldn't even hear music anymore. We asked around and a floor below us is being built left and right, BY OUR OWN HOTEL! (Watch the video) While guests are staying at the hotel, construction is going on in the middle from 9 in the morning to 6 in the evening. I can't understand how they can do this to their guests and when we asked for a solution they wanted to offer us a room on the first floor or a suite in the Leonardo Royal (please google it to understand why we refused ). When we looked around our room, we didn't find any bathrobes. So at the next room service we asked if we could get that. When we got back they were there, but when I put one on it smelled very strongly of smoke and I found a cigarette in my pocket. When I asked how that could be and whether they don't wash things after a change of guests, I didn't get a real answer. Even with various other things, the service is not up to 5 stars. Conclusion: Even if they refund us 20%, we still cannot rest in the room, which makes it unnecessary. Various other guests have also complained, but in my opinion it looks like the hotel doesn't care as much.

I've been to Brighton many times and seen the hotel, so finally booked a room for Sunday night. Unfortunately it did not meet my expectations and I'm lucky I paid a reduced rate as I would not be happy to pay the general rooms rates for a Saturday stay. The room was OK and the decor was nice. The shower pressure was quite high and very good. The location of the hotel is excellent for where we wanted to be, with a great selection of restaurants and bars close by. The floor boards outside our room were very noisy and woke me up anytime someone walked past as it sounded like they were in the room. There was also building work with drilling which started up below us in the morning. The lighting for the mirrors is poor in the bedroom and on the wardrobe door, and the bathroom steams up too much to use the mirror in there after a shower. The bed was OK but a little too hard for me. A soft and a firm pillow were provided, but not very comfy so it did not give me a good nights sleep, however I am picky nowadays for bed and pillows. The receptionist checking us in was also quite frosty. She told us which lift to get but did not inform us that it was out of order for our floor. The doormen on the other hand were very friendly and welcoming. I was expecting a higher grade of service and stay for this hotel and would therefore not recommend staying here for the prices advertised.
