Built in 1906 as a ‘Palace of Business’, originally the headquarters for one of the most powerful railway companies in England, it was built during the Golden Age of travel. The Grand is an iconic building, which reflects the elegance and glamour of the period, the success and wealth of the company that commissioned it.
In 2010, this imposing building was reborn as one of Yorkshire’s finest hotels and meeting spaces. Splendidly retaining many of its original features, The Grand exudes luxury and grandeur and has a reputation for exceptional service in the style and tradition you would expect from a five-star hotel, combined the warmest of Yorkshire welcomes.
The Grand, York is surrounded by the longest and best-preserved medieval walls in England. York is steeped in a rich history dating back to the Romans and the Vikings. The architecture and visitor attractions are testament to this, with a roll call of cultural treasures, museums and art.
The Chairman’s Suite was the original office of the Chair of the North Eastern Railway and accommodates up to 35 delegates. After board meetings or during particularly gruelling negotiations, he could retire to his suite and dine alone, with close associates or those he was keen to impress – and impress is what this room does very well.
Wood clad pillars, an ornate fireplace and views of the City Wall create a very definite mood: authority. The perfect setting for a meeting, private dining and special occasions.

Called in during a day out for a pot of tea. We were pleasantly surprised at what we received for only £5 each. Nice china cups , silver pots with oat milk, complementary biscuits and extra water.Very nice and pleasant surroundings.Staff were polite and efficient.

Just had afternoon tea with my family for my mothers birthday, in the Victoria lounge. My mother has a gluten and dairy intolerance, so she is not the easiest to cater for, but the staff and chef went to great effort to ensure that she was very well looked after. Like everyone else, she had some very lovely sandwiches, savoury stuff, and a really tasty looking cake selection. She was even able to have the scones, which she greatly misses as she usually has to skip this sort of thing. They have an amazing array of teas and there was something for everyone. The food was all really lovely, but a special mention for the pork and leek sausage rolls, which were the nicest sausage rolls I've had anywhere. The service was impeccable and a great time was had by all, but the thing we are truly grateful for, is that this is the first time in a lot of years of eating out with family, that we didn't feel my mothers meal was compromised in some way by her dietary requirements. She did not feel like she was missing out on anything, and she had a really fantastic birthday to remember.

Loved the Grand Hotel. 25th wedding anniversary, and they looked after us a treat. We had an upgrade to sea view, which was amazing. The rooms are really big, they left wine and chocolate strawberries. All amenities , mini fridge , tea and coffee, robes, and slippers. The bathroom was also full of lotions and washes . Plenty of towels. We had breakfast included and couldn't fault it. There was a lot of selection to cater to everyone. They even gave us a free Bucks Fizz. So polite I felt really refreshed and very well looked after. Can't wait to go again.

Phenomenal afternoon tea! Service was warm friendly and attentive, and we were made to feel very special. The food was delicious and the gluten free options in particular were great. The room the afternoon tea is served in is beautiful with views out to the sea. It was a lovely afternoon with impeccable attention to detail from staff. Thanks so much and we look forward to returning soon.

A very 'Grand' hotel indeed. Sat on the seafront with great views. We had a Sunday Roast and it was delicious. It was excellent value for money (2 courses for £24.95) and the quantity and quality of the food was excellent. The waiting staff very very helpful and friendly. The restaurant had a unique style, although quite dark inside it had a sea theme. The toilets were immaculate. I will definitely be returning in the future.
