Sir John Soane's Museum
The Museum was designed by one of Britain's greatest architects, Sir John Soane (1753-1837) and was his home as well as his private Museum. Listed Grade I, it is a building of outstanding originality with its picturesque vistas and inventive handling of light and space. Soane’s collections – architectural fragments, Graeco-Roman marbles, casts, paintings, sculpture and furniture – are integrated with the architecture of the building, and are still arranged today as they were at the time of his death. Behind its unusual projecting facade lies London’s most unexpected interior, every aspect of which reflects its creator’s architectural ingenuity, imagination and love of beauty.

One of, if not the most remarkable collections in London! It’s amazing how they’ve kept his entire eclectic collection within his purpose built home. A dizzying array of objects, spanning across time and space, removed from their original contexts and re-arranged in a collage, ordered by aesthetic instinct.

Fascinating window into the life of an early 1800's collector. Maybe these days people would say hoarder. So there's so much to take in that we could have spent twice the time & still not seen everything in such a small space. Luckily we managed to get on the tour of the private rooms, after two people dropped out, which really brought life to the objects on display and the history of the Soane family. It's free but numbers are limited as the houses are as John Soane left them. So narrow corridors, no lifts but equally no exhibits glassed off away from the viewer. Really enjoyed it.

My second visit, this is a wonderful museum and is highly recommended. My only criticism is the line up and wait arrangements. I can't understand why timed entrance tickets aren't available online. I appreciate the museum is free, but I encourage visitors to leave a donation.

This museum has a bit of everything which is nice such as; paintings, sculptures, modern art pieces, and antiques. The rooms are absolutely incredible and breathtaking it's like stepping into another world. Some rooms and corridors are small and there is no information displayed but, you can buy a £3 guide with all the information in it. There are stairs in the museum and toilets. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting this museum. The staff were very kind and welcoming they kept you well informed.

I won’t say too much about this museum, except that it has a very special charm—visiting feels like stepping into an exceptional, extraordinary home, as if you’re exploring a friend’s residence. Walking through its halls and floors, each room reveals itself, meticulously chosen and filled with beautiful objects selected with care and love by the owner. Entry is free, although visitors are welcome to make a small donation if they wish. The visit concludes with a gift shop, where it’s hard to resist taking home a souvenir to remember the authenticity of this wonderful experience.
