Hold your wedding surrounded by thousands of years’ worth of stunning history.
Built when Colchester became the first Roman Capital of Britain, Colchester Castle is the biggest surviving Norman Keep in Europe. Ordered by William the Conqueror around 1076, it is built on the foundations of the earlier Roman Temple of Claudius, dating back to AD 54-50. It is home to over 2000 years’ worth of History, from Royalty to besieges, imprisonments, and executions.
The Chapel is by far the most popular place that our couples choose to exchange their vows. The high vaulted white ceilings give the space a stunning romantic and peaceful charm, and the tinted natural daylight which fills the room through the stained windows, adding to the ethereal atmosphere of the room.
Named after Charles Gray himself, the Charles Gray Room is the most popular private space within Colchester Castle to hold a wedding breakfast. It holds up to 80 seated guests, making it an appealing and intimate space for you to spend time with your family and friends.

Colchester Castle is an extraordinary historical landmark that offers a fascinating glimpse into Britain's rich past. From the moment you approach the castle, you’re struck by its impressive stature and well-preserved Norman architecture. The castle is steeped in history, having stood since the 11th century, and exploring it feels like stepping back in time. The museum inside is superbly curated, with exhibits that cover everything from the Roman origins of Colchester to the medieval period. The displays are informative and engaging, with a mix of artifacts, interactive exhibits, and multimedia presentations that bring history to life for visitors of all ages. The section on Boudica and the Roman invasion is particularly compelling, providing a vivid account of the events that shaped the region. One of the highlights is the guided tour of the castle’s vaults and roof. The knowledgeable guides do an excellent job of explaining the castle’s history and architecture while leading you through areas not accessible on a regular visit. The views from the rooftop are breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of Colchester and the surrounding countryside. The castle is surrounded by beautiful gardens, which provide a peaceful setting for a stroll or a picnic. It’s a lovely place to relax and take in the atmosphere after exploring the castle. The staff at Colchester Castle are friendly and enthusiastic, clearly passionate about sharing the history of this remarkable site. The castle is also very family-friendly, with plenty of activities to keep children entertained, including a treasure hunt and hands-on exhibits. Overall, Colchester Castle is a must-see attraction that combines history, beauty, and a sense of adventure. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for an enjoyable day out, the castle offers something for everyone. It’s a visit you won’t soon forget!

I didn't realise how much I loved history until I stepped back in time to Colchester Castle. I remembered learning about it at school many moons ago but to walk through those doors, visit the vaults, and be on the rooftop...wow. I had previously been put off due to the entry fee if I'm honest, but after experiencing it today, it is worth every penny. We booked the additional tour, which provided access to the vaults; you need only do this once, but actually just the gravity of it would probably make me want to do it again. The museum was packed full of fantastic artefacts and mosaics, stories and exhibitions and the tour really added some more depth to it. It's very interactive for children of all ages providing activities like dressing up, things to touch/feel, an interactive chariot race on a screen, buttons to press to hear character stories...I could go on. The grounds are beautifully kept surrounding the castle and it really is one to do if you're in the city.

Fantastically showcased history! Wonderful helpful staff & the tour guide (Glyn, if memory serves) was knowledgeable, sensitive to the atrocities of the past & handled them beautifully, answered all questions & made the experience absolutely brilliant. A great time that I'd heartily recommend to anybody, thank you.

Castle park is a very well maintained park throughout the year. It has plenty of events and beautifully landscaped gardens. Ideal for a nice walk, picnic and enjoying the regular events held there.

A little pricey not even concessions for over 75's. Good information upstairs, there is a lift, for the use of the castle over the ages. Downstairs a little disjointed with items from Dr Who. There is a gift shop and people to give you talks, for a price, on top of the entry fee. Overall, not worth the money, but interesting.
