The Magnificent awe inspiring Compton Room has definitely got the ‘wow factor’. It is adorned with ornate plaster work dating back to the Victorian era when it was the hotel ballroom.

Sea front grand Victorian hotel; excellent service. We ate in the Restaurant, Mirabelleon our first night. Lovely food; small portions and pricy ,especially the wine. But we had a lovely time and the staff are top class.

Beautiful, traditional, hotel, with welcoming staff in every part of it. My friend and I booked a stay at the Grand which included breakfast and £90 towards dinner. Our double room was much larger than you'd get at a regular chain hotel or B&B, with two single beds, a dresser, two armchairs, a table, and another space near the door with a large mirror. We arrived early and asked the reception team if we could park and return. This was not an issue although we hadn't prebooked. Anyone who visits the UK coast knows how expensive that typically is. The hotel did t charge us. After a walk, we returned at about 2 pm and received a call to let us know our room was available so we unpacked and headed to the spa. There is not much to write about there, a very small pool, jacuzzi and steam room. Surprisingly small given the size of the hotel, so I wouldn't consider the Grand for a spa day. For dinner, we went to the Garden Restaurant, which is where the breakfast is also served. Drinks aren't included in the £90, so we didn't have much to pay on top of our dinner. We opted for burgers as its not something we both typically eat, and had a chocolate dessert and the dessert of the day, which was a white chocolate trifle. A bit heavy for someone without a sweet tooth, but generous! The breakfast was continental at the buffet and everything else to order. All delicious food, and again, the service is second to none. Martyn worked both dinner and breakfast, and the server with the red bob also took care of us. After check out, we went for another walk and collected the car at 12pm. All in all, highly recommend the Grand. It has all the traditional touches of a classic hotel.

We had afternoon tea a couple of months ago which was excellent and because of that we booked dinner at the Garden Grill last Saturday evening. The food was very good but the service was mediocre. We had a wrong dish served, the wrong dessert wines were brought to the table (the waitress asking if we were absolutely certain we wanted the banyuls) and the salt and pepper didn't work. Also when we arrived at the hotel there was no greeting and we had to ask someone to take our coats. All small things but bearing in mind this is a 5 star hotel it was disappointing.
