Welcome to Blackfriars, believed to be the oldest purpose-built dining room in the UK! Dating back to 1239, the restaurant served as the refectory for the 'Black Friars' of Newcastle. We're open for lunch and dinner and also have hundreds of events in our Banquet Hall, Cookery School, Tasting Room and Dormitory Meeting Room. Blackfriars offers an exciting range of events for private and corporate groups from 8 to larger parties of up to 50 people including; weddings, private celebrations (birthday, anniversary, christening's), authentic medieval banquets and bespoke cookery and tasting events.
Our unique Tasting Room is located above the restaurant in the original Tanners Guild meeting area, featuring their original antique 19th century seating, and caters for a range of corporate and private events including wine, beer and whisky tasting and is a unique meeting space for up to 28 people. The ornate Tasting Room can also be used as a private dining space for up to 18 guests.

Custom policy: January- November: Card details are required to guarantee all reservations of 8-11 diners though please note you will not be charged when making your booking. Any reduction in numbers or full party cancellations within 72 hours of the time of your arrival may result in a cancellation fee of £10 per person being taken from your credit/debit card. Diners that simply fail to arrive will also be charged £10 per person or the full price of any pre-ordered meal. For private bookings and parties of 12+, we do require a £10pp deposit, which can be deducted from your bill. December: Card details are required to guarantee all reservations of 1-7 diners though please note you will not be charged when making your booking. All credit card information is secure and protected online by SSL encryption, the industry standard. The deposit is to be paid at the time of confirming the reservation and is non-refundable. Provisional bookings will be held for 1 week, if booked more than a month in advance. Deposits may be held on account if a late cancellation occurs, no later than 2 weeks prior. All private events including meetings, cookery, children’s parties and tasting events require full pre-payment 1 week in advance. Please note: a 10% service charge is added to all final bills. All tips go to the front of house staff and chefs.

April 2024Came here for a meal as part of an 18 man stag do. The dining hall was brilliantly laid out and the decor was right up our street. The service for us all was great and we couldn’t fault it, we were very well looked after. The absolute highlight was the food…wow! From starters to desserts there wasn’t a shred of food left on our plates. Highly recommend 👍🏻

Our server (Maria ... not 100% on name) was so knowledgeable and friendly. She picked out the perfect wine matches! The food was phenomenal, such good flavours and presentation. Good portions and very fresh. We had the set lunch menu and everything was delicious. We will certainly be back

March 2024We had an AMAZING night with our firm in this restaurant! The round table upstairs is one of the most unique settings I have ever in my life had dinner in. Our waiter Louie did an amazing job serving us and was also able to tell about the history of the building. Highly recommended!

April 2024Amazing place 1st class location and venue's. Equally matched by the staff and their service. They also host cooking classes in a purpose built teaching kitchen above the restaurant. This place is incredible and is definitely worth the money again and again.
