    October 2024

Oh, Davy’s Wine Bar! Where I nipped in for a quick lunch, and promptly felt a profound pang of jealousy watching a handful of locals swirl their cabernets and chardonnays in goblets the size of small bath tubs. There they were, blissfully ensconced in a wine tasting event, sipping away in the middle of the day like Roman gods while I, sadly and painfully sober, had to exercise restraint for the sake of… professionalism. Professionalism, yes, because I was speaking on stage around the corner, and it wouldn’t do to turn up tipsy—God forbid I actually told the audience what I really thought. So, instead of a few glasses of plonk and a taste of that high life, I settled on a Diet Coke and a plate of smoked salmon. A rather slim portion it was, but fine, lovely even—delicately brined, served with a scattering of capers and just enough lemon to keep things interesting. The service was friendly, unobtrusive but attentive, as if they could sense I was one well-poured pinot away from complete abandon. Ah, what could have been, had I not been tethered to the shackles of decency. Still, a tidy lunch, a Diet Coke, and a dose of envy it was. Here’s to next time when I’m not professionally handcuffed and can swig with the best of them.
