The Betsy Smith morphed into Bokor in autumn 2016, when all traces of the former English-whimsy furnishings were swept away.

The new name is shared with a Haitian voodoo sorcerer, hence a mission statement that promises ‘good food and evil spirits’. Whichever sorcerer conjured up Bokor’s busy decor was prone to skittishness, chucking a dark-wood Edwardian back bar, Aegean taverna, Italian café and 1950s Polynesian tiki lounge into the jolly mix. The all-day menu is similarly catholic, with a Med bias, listing full English and fish & chips alongside duck breast with dauphinois, and various pizza toppings. The aforementioned evil spirits appear in a long moderately priced cocktail list whose standouts include an Old Fashioned made with Glenlivet whisky, honey, rosemary and ginger; Pompeii (a Beefeater gin Sour with pomegranate, grape and peach juices); and Rhubarb and Custard (served hot). Serviceable Spanish house wine kicks off a fairly priced list.

The pub was better run when it was bokor. They had music events . A nice place to go local and have a dance. Comedy gigs happen on a Wednesday evening. Other than that the light's are on and there's no one home .

good service at the bar, wont be back though people allowed to sit on the stairs when the football is on which is very dangerous and a health and safety risk. wasn't aloud to book a table during the euros yet people are putting chairs in the way of the stairs so you cant go up and sit on the tables. drunk and homeless people coming in and out and making a mess outside the front of the pub.

What an absolute joke, I was staying in the area and fancied a quick pint after the cricket only to be told it was a private party. What was it? The local hip replacement society. Jesus, good look, staying open in a predominantly muslin area. Door staff all 5 of all very odd
