Nestled in an idyllic part of the Scottish Borders, Thirlestane Castle is a magnificent 16th century castle set in a meadow landscape. Family home to the Duke of Lauderdale, it is one of the oldest and finest castles in Scotland and still remains home to the Maitland family today.
Thirlestane Castle is available for weddings, corporate events, meetings, private dining and celebrations. Just 35 minutes south of Edinburgh it's easily accessible just off the A68.
This recently refurbished, Victorian-era kitchen on the upper ground floor has a vaulted ceiling and still contains the 19th century range cookers which provide an interesting focal point. This space has a more rustic, relaxed and contemporary feel to the rest of the castle. Level access available.

A fabulous guided tour. The guide answered our questions well. It was intriguing yo hear the myth, history and legends of the castle. The history of the 19 Earls was fascinating. Beautiful decor and fabulous plastered ceilings. An extra gem was all the vintage toys in the nursery. Even an original Paddington Bear.

Excellent, our guide was 5*. Tour lasted two hours with drink and biscuits included at the end. Castle information was very interesting. Well worth a visit.

The pre-booked tour which is the only way to see inside the Castle was superb. Our guide Sue was a delight. Unlike so many stately homes things are not roped off and you can fully immerse yourself in this homely and personal interior, which has interesting artifacts and fine art. The family history associated with so many Royals and Nobles is fascinating.

I was supposed to get married here but my ex had other plans. Anyways, the staff were fantastic to work with and, when my wedding was canceled, they offered me a two night stay. I’ve never felt happier. If you’re just visiting or getting married, I’d highly recommend!!

We didn't actually visit the castle but were there for a recording/filming of the Antiques Roadshow. There was a lot of queuing but it was well worth it and we received favourable valuations for the two pictures we took. We met the owner of the castle and had a great conversation about Deerhounds. We will certainly return before too long.
