In the South Downs National Park, The Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa dates back to 1430. Old and original features are still present, including inglenook fireplaces, Tudor bread ovens, Flemish stained-glass windows and oak beams. Each of its bedrooms is individually designed, and the cosy Queen’s Suite is said to have housed Elizabeth I. The largest of the function rooms is the Jacobean Hall, which has stone walls, heraldic banners and a minstrels gallery. The more intimate King Edward VII Suite, on the other hand, is ideal for informal meetings. Guests in need of some R&R should check out the Scandinavian-style spa and indoor pool.

Originally a coaching inn dating back about 600 years, this really is an historic building. We only went here for afternoon tea, so can't comment on rooms or the full menus, but if our experience was representative then I'd not expect you to be disappointed here. Big wood burning hearths kept it cosy in the oak-beamed bar, and we were served a nice big stack of cakes and sandwiches (I felt sick by the end of it and couldn't even manage the trifle). Staff were lovely - I'd definitely go back to sample a restaurant meal.

This is the 6th time I have visited this hotel and we really love it. We were married in the Church opposite 25 years ago and have kept coming back to celebrate various wedding anniversarys. This year we celebrated with 11 other couples over 2 days at the hotel. The service and rooms were all wonderful. We were upgraded to the Queen's Suite for no extra cost. It is a FABULOUS room and we were also treated with a free glass of champagne. All the staff are brilliant and make you feel very much at home. Lovely to see such a great range of age and experience. Very dog friendly too. Food could not have been better. Loved lounging in the ancient bar and the super spa and pool are a very aesthetic places to be! The place really has everything for me! I would go there every year and stay at least a week each time if I could. Walking and local area stunning.
