The Queen is in residence at the Palace of Holyroodhouse during Holyrood week, which usually takes place from the end of June to the beginning of July. Then the Scottish variant of the Royal Standard of the United Kingdom is flown, and the Royal Company of Archers forms Her Majesty's ceremonial bodyguard.
The Queen received His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI at Holyroodhouse during The Pope’s official visit to the UK in September 2010. The gift presented by His Holiness to Her Majesty, a facsimile of the Lorsch Gospels, is on display at the Palace.

December 2024It is recommended to buy a ticket directly from the Castle as it is a 1 year pass if you buy this way. If you buy tickets from resellers the ticket is a one time ticket only. It is a place that you have to visit if you’re in Edinburgh. Very interesting historical site and you can have a look at the royal family living area. The audio guide is very helpful and informative. Highly recommended if you like the history.

February 2025After more than 7 years living in Edinburgh I visited the Palace, I booked online there were not queues, an audio guide is included in many languages which is good to learn about the different rooms you are going through, the interior of the palace is impressive really nice, the only thing is videos and pictures are not allowed in there, I would like to come back to have a coffee in the coffee shop that looks nice but I did not have enough time

February 2025TL;DR: The Palace of Holyrood is a must-visit in Edinburgh, offering rich history, stunning architecture, and engaging exhibits. No photography inside, but well worth exploring. The Palace of Holyrood is one of Edinburgh’s most significant landmarks, serving as the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. Steeped in history, it was once home to Mary, Queen of Scots, and played a central role in Scotland’s royal past. While photography isn’t allowed inside, the beautifully preserved rooms, elaborate tapestries, and historical artifacts make for a fascinating visit. The displays provide deep insight into Scotland’s monarchy, from medieval times to modern-day royal use. The highlight for many is Mary, Queen of Scots’ chambers, where dramatic events unfolded during her reign. Beyond the palace, the ruins of Holyrood Abbey and the surrounding gardens add to the experience, offering stunning views with Arthur’s Seat in the background. If you’re visiting Edinburgh, this is a must-see stop for history lovers and royal enthusiasts alike!

January 2025Absolutely lovely place to visit. No photography allowed inside, audio guide available. Amazing building and so many fantastic state rooms and history. Also a lovely twa room for fabulous warm meals or just a snack or afternoon tea. Nice restrooms too. Lovely grounds even in winter
