About Venue

This striking Category B listed pink sandstone church was converted into a theatre in the 1960s and over nearly 50 years has gained an established reputation as one of Scotland’s leading non-professional theatres. As well as being home to many of Edinburgh’s amateur theatrical companies, it is a popular venue for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Church Hill Theatre is owned by the City of Edinburgh Council and managed by the Assembly Rooms team. Full of character and history, the venue has been refurbished and is available for event hire where performance programming allows. The traditional auditorium is ideal for Theatre performances, concerts, demonstrations, talks and small conferences.

Great venue and seating arrangement. Stage works and lighting perfect. Sound a little up.and down at times but not detrimental to the show. Clear view onto the stage, we were in row K. Toilets clean, large queue for the bar but this went down quickly. Only down side was the room temp, old theatre so a little chilly, I had a shawl with me so this covered it.

Disappointing Experience at Church Hill Theatre Edinburgh. I recently attended a charity show at the Church Hill Theatre Edinburgh, which was highly recommended, so I decided to go twice. Unfortunately, my experience was marred by the poor behavior of a staff member. The theatre itself has seen better days, with seats that seem to be as old as the building, stair way was slippy with no signs for safety. To make the most of your visit, it's best to opt for seats with extra legroom. However, the real issue was the unacceptable behavior of a staff member - a heavy-set man in his 30s. On the first night, he was rude to two guests, clearly having a bad day and taking it out on others. I brushed it off as a one-off, but things escalated on the second night. During the second show, the same staff member lost his temper and screamed at guests over a non-existent law. To add insult to injury, he confiscated drinks from patrons without warning, citing a policy that wasn't clearly communicated. This behavior is not only unprofessional but also unacceptable in any customer-facing environment. It's clear that the staff at Church Hill Theatre Edinburgh need proper training in customer excellence and awareness of laws and regulations. Guests should be informed about any specific policies, such as not bringing their own drinks, before attending a show. The theatre is run by the council, Edinburgh Culture but yet staff are clueless in what culture means and non profit charties. If the venue was free I'd see the point of such behaviour. Until the theatre addresses these issues, I would advise potential attendees and clients especially summer time to think twice before booking a show here. The talent on stage was great, but the experience was ruined by the poor service.
