The Queen is in residence at the Palace of Holyroodhouse during Holyrood week, which usually takes place from the end of June to the beginning of July. Then the Scottish variant of the Royal Standard of the United Kingdom is flown, and the Royal Company of Archers forms Her Majesty's ceremonial bodyguard.
The Queen received His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI at Holyroodhouse during The Pope’s official visit to the UK in September 2010. The gift presented by His Holiness to Her Majesty, a facsimile of the Lorsch Gospels, is on display at the Palace.

This was such a stunning palace. Steeped in history, it offers a wonderful self-guided audio tour, explaining the significance of each room as you pass through them and how it relates to important dates of the past. As a former residence of Mary Queen of Scots, I was particularly intrigued to see where her poor Italian secretary met his demise so long ago. And the fabled blood that could reportedly still be seen on the floor. You may take as many photos as you wish of the exterior, but none are allowed within the walls which actually made it an even better experience because you just paid attention to all the details inside, from the furnishings, to the paintings on the walls, to the ceilings. Not a camera or phone in sight. The abbey ruins and gardens are spectacular. Truly breathtaking. So if the weather cooperates (and even if it doesn't) take a walk along the paths outside. We also had the opportunity to taste some first rate scones and tea from the tea rooms by the palace too. Great value for money..

I have visited a few royal castles and palaces on this trip, and although it is smaller in size and less grand, this was one of my favorite sites. The location and atmosphere, the backdrop to Arthur's seat was breathtaking! Get the tour headset!

Beautiful building with a matching heavenly landscape. Palace of Holyroodhouse hosts a rich collection of portraits of the royal family, combined with fascinating history. Highly recommended for 1-1.5 hours visit.
How it is Liz
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is certainly a site to see while in Edinburgh! It's quite impressive! It was a memorable experience to tour, especially considering it's still a working palace used by the king while he is in Scotland. The audio guide is a great enhancement. I would have been lost without it. The history was very interesting as well as disturbing. I felt a chill climbing the staircase to enter the room where Mary Queen of Scott's secretary and close companion met his demise, murdered by her husband. There is a creepy vibe to some parts of the palace, but it's cool to see nonetheless. No photos are allowed inside. There is a delightful cafe area with a decent selection of options available as well as a gift shop. The outdoor Abbey is definitely worth walking over to see. Despite being under construction, it's still very beautiful. I'm thankful to have had the opportunity to see this palace while in Scotland!
