The Montcalm: Brewery London City, Worsely
The Brewery, 52 Chiswell Street, London, EC1Y 4SA -

The Montcalm at the Brewery wears its quirky heritage with pride, an award-winning transformation from historic brewery to handsome five star hotel. With period features at every turn, it stays faithful to its past as the eighteenth century base of Whitbread & Co, but it’s also every inch the twenty-first century hotel you’d expect of a superbly central City of London location. A refreshing blend of elegance and informality, it’s the ideal urban retreat, welcoming wide-eyed explorers and time-pressed business travellers alike to the true heart of London.
A beautiful space boasting original Grade 1 listed timbers from the old Brewery offices, the Worsely takes its name from one of the original founders of the old Whitbread brewery. Natural light floods in through elegant sash windows, and, like the Melville, this high-ceilinged space overlooks Chiswell Street Dining Rooms.

After reading a few of the reviews I was a bit dubious about our stay, but I should not have been worried. Yeah it's billed as a 5 star hotel, but the price is what you would pay for a 4 star and if you hold your expectations at this level we had a nice stay. Room was well equipped, few fixtures in the bathroom were not great but overall no problem. Staff were very friendly and breakfast was good. Compared to a stay in Edinburgh the previous weekend this was much better value for money

The room was spacious and clean for a good price. The hotel is a bit of a maze but concierge guided us to the room on the first day which made things easier. The only negative of our stay was a strange fire alarm a few hours after checking in which they claimed to be a weekly test. We would’ve liked to have been warned beforehand if this was a scheduled test. Otherwise, front desk was friendly and helpful throughout the trip.

My wife and daughter stayed here on 25th June. The biggest issue with this hotel is expectation. They were expecting a five star hotel and arrived to find a three star hotel. Location and service were OK but the hotel is dated and in places dirty. The sheets didn’t fit the beds properly. They took a £50 deposit for no reason they could see as the minibar was empty and there is no bar. If you get a room cheap and expect a three star then all good. If you are expecting a five star experience then you will be sorely disappointed. You will note the similar response to this review as all the rest. Saying sorry is easy, doing something about it is the key.
