A £15 million development has transformed the gallery, doubling it in size and creating new spaces that embrace the park it calls home.
Yet although the Whitworth is about to open a new chapter in its history, the organisation itself has a much broader story to tell.
You'll be able to find out about that story here, alongside information about our research projects, our wonderful historic collection, the Friends of the Whitworth, the people who work here and much more.
On 1 July, at a prestigious ceremony at Tate Modern, the gallery was awarded the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2015. It’s the largest arts award in Britain and the biggest museum prize in the world.
It is awarded to the museum or gallery in the UK that is judged to have best demonstrated excellence, innovation and imagination. We reopened on 14 February, but while we were closed we did all we could to remain “open”, with pop-up projects all over the city and beyond, maintaining links to our existing audiences and building new ones. Since reopening, our new building has enabled us to undertake larger and more ambitious projects, presentations and exhibitions, and we hope we have realised our potential as a major UK cultural destination.

February 2025A really good art gallery, surrounded by attractive parkland. Free to visit. There's a changing programme of exhibitions featuring a wide range of artists, styles and mediums. (The exhibition 'Turner: Light and Shade', on show at the time of writing, is particularly impressive.) The gallery is part of the University of Manchester, on Oxford Road a little way outside the city centre, but it's easily accessible by bus with frequent buses. Well worth a visit.

December 2024The perfect antidote to the rest of Manchester in mid December. Calm and welcoming space. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Quiet. Great exhibitions, and a nice building.

January 2025we visited on a tuesday afternoon and were slightly disappointed by the lack of exhibitions on display due to construction but it was to be expected in early january . i was particularly moved by the jakkai siributr exhibit - photos attached . the garden space is a lovely walk and the staff were friendly and very helpful ! the cafe food looked delicious but we didn’t have time to stop and eat :(

February 2025Nice art gallery. Worth a visit. Nice cafe therein. The black forest coffee was nice-a cuppa of chocolate and coffee with a dollop of cream and a cherry on top

January 2025A small but sprawling, pleasant contemporary & modern art museum with a nice, cozy cafe overlooking a gorgeous park. The museum is free, with good accessibility. You'll be greeted by helpful, friendly staff. I recommend you come just a bit before lunch & order food before seeing the exhibitions, as they frequently run out of the best dishes, like the mixed salads & orechetti pasta with fresh tomatoes. Good tea, good coffee. However perhaps you want to avoid the rather strange flat English "everything" bagel with lox & cream cheese. Not only is it scant on the cream cheese & fish, but they add a quirky beet spread. Maybe they want to rethink this particular item. The exhibits are engaging, featuring both important artists as well as new ones. Some areas of the museum could use better lighting, however. Absolutely worth the visit.
