The Chequers, The Barn

A proper pub! The minute you step in, the smell and feel almost take you back in time. We were looking for somewhere for dinner and hadn’t booked, was turned down by 2 other local pubs (that were recommended to us) because we hadn’t booked so tried our luck at The Chequers and the host couldn’t have been more helpful to squeeze us in. I’m so glad because the food was so good. I can highly recommend the Steak & Ale Pie and the beef burger. And also recommend coming here first before trying any other pubs! Will come back again when in the area.

An amazing place to eat out. When we visited, the pub was heaving with locals, big-screen rugby fans, and early theatre-goers. Despite this, the imaginatively created restaurant are a was an oasis of calm. The welcome was warm; the menu was interesting; the food was excellent and reasonably-priced, and the service was prompt, efficient, and almost carried out as performance art. We loved it.

Visited on Sat 25 January 2025 for a family get together. The chef Josh spoke to guests to check that we had enough food & had enjoyed what he had prepared. The food & hospitality was excellent. There was a good selection of vegetarian dishes. The cakes & desserts were lovely too. I would recommend The Chequers. Wish I was local.
