Once an 18th century coaching inn, The White Hart in Ampthill is situated in the north of the Georgian market town.
This historic Grade II listed building, which may date back as far as the 16th Century, continues to be a prominent destination in Ampthill. Features include a wall mural above the bar’s fireplace of the Prince of Wales feathers, created by local artists in 1646, whilst our stylish 1930s dining room was built towards the end of the arts and crafts era.
Our Mediterranean-inspired menu is served daily from 8am, and guests can choose from a variety of dishes all freshly prepared in our open kitchen. The provenance and quality of our ingredients is paramount, and our produce is ethically sourced and traceable from field to fork.
From our British meat to our free-range eggs and local beers, care is taken to ensure whether you choose our dry aged ribeye cooked over charcoal in our Josper oven, or local ale battered cod and chips, your dining experience is memorable. For families, we offer a bespoke children’s menu with accompanying activity pack, and most dietary requirements are met with ease.
Our comfortable bar area serves an extensive and varied drinks menu, while our private function space can suit any requirements from birthday celebrations to a corporate lunch.
Outside, enjoy a drink in the courtyard at The White Hart. For when the weather is a little unpredictable, we have a canopy covering providing some additional shelter. Guests are welcome to extend their visit by staying in one of our eight boutique-style bedrooms, which bring together the character of the coaching inn with the comforts of a modern hotel.

March 2025Great location in a small market town. Good size pub with decent beers. Food is good, with particularly decent breakfast. Staff were all very helpful. Hotel rooms nice and clean and comfy.

April 2025Lovely large pub and restaurant which accommodated us for lunch on a Sunday without a reservation. Helpful with a high chair and space to park a buggy. Food was excellent, including pizzas cooked in a proper pizza oven by a chef who was clearly passionate about his craft. Good value for money.

February 2025My recent experience at White Hart in Ampthill was unfortunately marred by extremely impolite and discourteous service from the bar staff. This was quite disappointing and has led me to the decision that I will not be returning to that pub ever again. Yesterday evening, after work on Thursday, February 28th, at approximately 7 o'clock, an unpleasant incident occurred when I popped in to the pub with my laptop after work intending to complete some work. I had a couple of drinks, then with the establishment becoming increasingly crowded, I approached the bar to order another, politely explaining that I felt I was occupying excessive space at my current table and inquiring about the availability of a smaller table equipped with a power outlet (as noone had bothered to come up to me and say anything about the situation). The response I received from the individual behind the bar, a rather unpleasant individual, was far from welcoming. With a dismissive tone, he replied, “Yeah, I know,” indicating that he was aware of the situation but was not willing to assist, and simply said they were fully booked. I packed up my belongings and told him to forget about the drink. Although a nicer young woman approached me and provided a more reasonable response as I was gathering my things, the initial encounter had already left a negative impression on me. Considering the numerous times I’ve dined at that establishment, I can only recall enjoying a satisfactory meal on a single occasion. They know how to cook a roast dinner. I do too, but I don’t charge £20 for it. I’ll never forget the time some pretentious person corrected my pronunciation of “Milanese”—then the food was burnt! Never again.
