Had afternoon tea here on 5th March which was excellent. The sandwiches were so fresh, the cakes were excellent and the scones were just the best. The staff were friendly and attentive (particularly our waitress whose name began with A) which made it a fabulous experience. I'd highly recommend.

This hotel has a lot of potential due to the lovely setting & pretty building but is 3* for a reason. We waited 20 minutes to check in with no staff in sight. The rooms are really dated and not the cleanest, lots of mould especially in the bathroom. The bed was AWFUL.. rock solid mattress so a bad nights sleep. The dinner is ok but not worth the money, find a local pub instead. We also ordered cocktails after dinner which clearly annoyed the girl behind the bar as she had tried to remove the sign and wanted to leave for a cigarette. The cocktail was awful for £12 too. The other staff were really friendly and helpful and the location is good for travelling around.

I'll start by saying the staff are nice, bar a couple of people. The receptionist and reservations manager have a keen focus on money, with a lack of focus on keeping customers happy, which is sad to see. At the end of the day it is all about money - a very sorry state of affairs for hospitality. There were issues with my reservation / booking / arrival date. It's unclear if this was my fault or not, but this was followed by a lot of unclear signalling from reception. According to the system, I arrived a day early. I had booked the best room in the hotel but was put into another room for the first night. The costs of the smaller room were then inflated. I was told it's £70 a night, with an original offer of 2 for 1 to be carried over. I said if I can keep the offer then I'll keep the smaller room. On leaving I was told it's £180 for the two nights and the reservation manager refused to budge. I was told they can't discount it any more due to commission. On the second day I couldn't move into the bigger room because it was occupied by someone else. Rubbish excuses throughout. Would not recommend the hotel personally. The staff in the restaurant were very nice though.

Went for dinner and the dining area was cold. Asked for the heating to be turned on, but I was told it was on a timer and hadn't yet kicked in (it was 7pm in the evening in early Feb). We were there for over an hour, and the room only got colder. The pie was mostly gravy, and the chips were undercooked. No ambience in the dining area which was noisy and overlit, no background music, and the tables & chairs were old, dirty and in need of some attention. Saving grace for the whole experience was the wonderful staff. I almost feel bad writing this review because they were so great, and are in no way to blame for the poor experience. The owners/management need to invest some money in the place or drop their prices, as they are marketing themselves as a high quality establishment, but it just isn't. There are much better places locally for much less money, and the ones that are similarly priced are far superior.
