My mum, who has dementia and has recently become widowed, had a most upsetting experience at the Sangam Centre on Tuesday. Despite several varied attempts to contact the centre regarding membership, I received no response. I suggested for mums carer to visit with mum in person to enquire, pay and attend. The lady who runs the senior ladies club, made them feel embarrassed and unwelcome. She was rude and dismissive, implying the club was not really suitable for people with dementia. Membership would therefore require board approval. This response was particularly upsetting as individuals with dementia can unfairly be excluded due to ignorance and misconceptions. Mum, accompanied by the carer thrives in social settings and happily participates in activities. Mum has always showed kindness and empathy to others and its a a shame that in her time of need that this sentiment was not reciprocated. Especially as Sangam is a 'charity' portrayed as a supportive environment for women, run by women. who according to their website claim to be 'inclusive' and 'sensitive to the needs of a group not always well served by mainstream services'. Luckily other charitable community centres appear more educated and have shown no discrimination, just compassion and kindness.
