It doesn’t make sense at first sight but it seems as if the concept of having your company’s Christmas party in January (or even February) is growing more and more popular within many organisations. But why is that? We’ve looked into why the strange combination of the bleakest time of the year and a smashing Christmas do is becoming the sheriff in town when it comes to corporate Christmas events.
The reasons why many corporate organisations are postponing the Christmas do to January
Here are the main reasons why the traditional corporate Christmas party has had to step aside and leave room for its delayed and, on the surface, somewhat strange cousine – the January Christmas do. We’ve also included some venues that’s perfect for a not-so-traditional party this season.
1. The better way to spend your money
We really shouldn’t be telling you this well-kept secret but supply and demand really is a thing (who would have thought?). December is a very expensive month for venue hire, so why not play it smart and ignore the fact that January and February technically aren’t Christmas and pay a little less for a little more? We wouldn’t blame you and some of our corporate customers are already doing the same.
Venues also want to fill their downtime and might give you a much better deal in January, traditionally a month of low or no bookings as we’re all inside hibernating waiting for spring. But not anymore – instead we’ll crawl out of our nests for a much needed delayed Christmas party with the team from now on.
2. The month(s) when we need it the most
We’ve all said it as the days get shorter and the weather slowly becomes more unbearable: December is okay but it’s in January and February you’re really starting to wonder if life is worth living. Usually there’s not much fun going on during these months and normally all we have to look forward to is spring on the (almost) horizon. It makes sense to give the team some extra energy and fun during this time rather than during December when they’re probably busy with fun plans anyway. Why not liven up your employees’ lives when you know they actually really need it?
3. Time is money (and we’re poor in December)
It’s not only that your employees might already have fun plans in December, they’re also likely to just have a lot of plans in general during the last month of the year. Christmas shopping, tree buying, market strolling, and carol singing may sound like delightful, wholesome activities but they do pile up and before you know it there’s not a single free slot in your diary, let alone in all of your team’s diaries at the same time. Why even bother trying to shoehorn it in when it risks becoming just another thing adding stress to everyone’s life? As long as you’re not in the gym industry January tends to be a slower month with a much better chance of actually getting the team together.
4. Don’t look back (in anger)
Why not take this chance to look forward instead of backwards? It’s been a long couple of years and it might make more sense for team spirit to look forward rather than backwards. Instead of celebrating what we’ve done and what we’ve been through you might want to consider looking forward to and celebrate all the exciting things you and your company have ahead of you. And what better way to look forward than with a big January celebration?
5. Times they are a-changin’
With all of the above in mind this could be the perfect time to make new traditions instead of just reusing old ones for the sake of it. We’re living in a disruptive day and age and this is your perfect chance to be creative and have fun with what you’ve been given. Maybe the yearly event at your company doesn’t include mulled wine but rather margaritas and maybe you can be creative when it comes to more than just the choice of alcohol. The sky’s the limit!
