Now here lies a place approximately 2km north-west of the Roman settlement of Londonium, the location where the legendary battle between Queen Boudicca of the Iceni and the Roman invaders took place.
A land once described as an ‘underused industrial wasteland’, known for gritty, pitch black corners, and a rather unpleasant past. Where is such a place, you may ask? Nowhere other than good old King’s Cross. Now, if you’re new to King’s Cross you wouldn’t believe me, and I wouldn’t blame you. Today King’s Cross is one of the most popular and thriving destinations in London with over 50 million commuters each year. Whether it’d be for the oh so convenient King’s Cross & St Pancras station, or for becoming a home for fashion and the arts there’s no denying that there’s just something about it which people can’t help but to love, which is great, as usually any up-coming city always leaves a painful reminder to its inhabitants that the ‘yuppies are coming’, and there’s usually a growing sense of resentment within a gentrified community. However, this time there’s no denying that King’s Cross has changed for the better! So, now after the brief history lesson let me take you through a little tour of some of the best of King’s Cross summer destinations it has to offer.
Looking for a boutique venue with a modern twist? Well The Driver certainly won’t disappoint! Located in the heart of King’s Cross you can expect relaxation, fun and entertainment on the menu. With exclusive hire of the terrace it’s the perfect spot for some sunshine in the city. But, why stop at the terrace? With five unique floors you’ll be left spoilt for choice when it comes to spaces to explore. Planning a King’s Cross summer soiree? Here’s your venue.
Let’s talk about EGG – not the type you have hard boiled or runny, I’m talking about EGG London, an eclectic, versatile venue which oozes cool vibes. Just like the Driver, EGG London is definitely not short for space, with an amazing choice of 4 rooms and 4 outdoor terraces you won’t have to cut anyone short on the guest list for your King’s Cross summer bash. The Terrace is an ideal extension when hired alongside the Ground floor and Garden for larger events which need a little more, offering an area to create something a little unusual. The spacious second roof terrace is the ultimate space for reception drinks, summer barbecues and team building exercises.
A personal fave of mine – The Big Chill House gives a taste of Shoreditch in King’s Cross (minus the overgrown beards and outward fashion trends). True to it’s name, it’s literally an amazing big house to chill in. With numerous bars across four different rooms the venue can comfortably cater for up to 550 people. But, what I love the most about The Big Chill House minus the decor, relaxing atmosphere, the sun terrace, and great food and drink, is The Games Room, which is perfect for entertaining your guests, and of course for having an excuse to act like a big kid again. Whether you’re hosting a summer party, or just trying to find a quirky space to hang out in, you won’t find much better than The Big Chill House.
As a fellow mojito lover and cocktail queen, I’d like to think of myself as cocktail connoisseur, and hand on heart I guarantee that you’ll not be left disappointed by the Grain Store who have been celebrated for their eclectic menu and award-winning cocktails. But, enough about the cocktails for a sec, let’s talk about Grain Store’s stunning dining room which boasts an open kitchen giving a theatrical flair. And, of course, let’s not forget about their scenic outdoor terrace which overlooks the fountains of Granary Square. An ideal venue for cocktail parties (obviously my fave), corporate events, and anything in between.
Describing themselves as ‘one of the most civilised travellers rests you’re likely to find anywhere’, The Betjeman Arms is a contemporary station pub, conveniently located in Kings Cross & St Pancras station. So, I know what you’re thinking… A station pub as a recommended King’s Cross summer venue, really? Well, it’s definitely not your usual summer venue, but I’m a true believer that sticking to the ordinary is boring. There’s also a gorgeous terrace and it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re ever around town or waiting to board your train to Paree. Plus, if I still haven’t convinced you, they’re renown for putting on a real good ale festival from time to time to to show off what we Brits do so well!
